Refugees - Try and Imagine

by Katherine Kehler

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me" (Matthew 25:35).

Most every newscast these days shows pictures of refugees streaming from their homes and everything comfortable and familiar, taking with them only what they can carry - mothers, small children and old people fleeing from potential war and destruction.

Have You ever Been a Refugee?
Or do you know someone who has been? My mother was - her family fled during the Russian revolution. Having grown up in an affluent home with servants, they now had to beg for food, shoes, everything. One day my grandfather bought shoes for his children only to find out that they were all for the same foot. They wore them anyways. Another time when they were able to buy some meat, they found to their consternation that when they unwrapped it, it was a woman’s breast. Cruel, hard times. But God was faithful and the whole family immigrated to Canada in 1923.

I was privileged to hear from a woman who had been of the Muslim faith. At an international women’s event she told us how she had left the Middle East with her children. Her son was very ill and after moving from country to country she ended up in England. She met a man who prayed to Jesus for the healing of her son and he was healed. When she saw that Jesus Christ had power to heal, she accepted Jesus as her Saviour and Lord.

Father, I pray for Your protection over the thousands of refugees fleeing from their homes right now. Give strength and wisdom to the mothers, children and old people. Supply their needs. Cause someone to introduce them to Jesus who is their Hope and Shield. Amen.
