Grandma's Unique Plan
by Len Neufeld“Grandma Gale” had already been on several international missions projects when she came upon a unique plan. Her grandchildren were starting to enter their teenage years - what better way to have a profound influence on their lives than to take them, one at a time, on an international missions project. And so it was that she, along with her oldest granddaughter, Jennelle, who was fourteen at the time, registered for a two week JESUS film project to Merida, Mexico.
Jennelle ended up on my film team along with two young men. What an interesting mix! Grandpa Len, the two young men, and Jennelle, the 14 year old. What a great time we had! There seemed to be no age barriers, no generation gap. We were there with a unified purpose and age difference was not a problem. We actually learned to like each other a lot. On Sunday our team was asked to come and participate in a local church service. Since the two young fellows on our team had other plans, Jennelle and I agreed to go. Both of us were asked to give brief testimonies through an interpretor. She turned out to be the popular one for the church crowd that day. They loved her.
It was also on this project that some local people took us on a hike to an underground swimming hole. Looking down into the hole all we could see were rocks, or so we thought. We soon realized that because the water was so clear, we couldn't even see it. To our dismay, two of us had forgotten to bring our swimwear. “Grandma Gale” and Jennelle were the only two ladies there. But with their encouragement and a promise to look the other way, we slipped into the pool in our underwear. It was a wonderfully refreshing underground swim away from the above ground heat.
The Mexican coordinators of the project told us that, although their people were quite capable to do film shows on their own, it would not have happened had we not come and been the catalyst. On that trip, 3,900 people were exposed to the Gospel during JESUS film shows and 650 indicated decisions for Christ.
Gale has since taken other grandchildren on missions projects.
